This article is intended to help institutions understand the operational considerations of a Cengage Unlimited (CU) agreement. Because CU can be structured in a variety of ways, the degree of institutional responsibility and platform support available through Akademos/VitalSource will vary depending on agreement model. The information below outlines how institutions and Cengage share responsibility for CU agreements across subscription term lengths and coverage models, supported by Akademos/VitalSource’s platform capabilities. Please note that a Cengage Unlimited agreement is required to adopt these materials in Day One Access programs. 

 

4-Month Subscription | All Students

Lowest oversight for institutions

PartyResponsibilities
Akademos/VitalSourceDeliver CU access through standard workflows and prevent duplicate charges within a single term.
InstitutionEnsure adoption accuracy and coordinate with Cengage on eligibility, adoption updates, and agreement questions.
CengageMonitor adoption reporting and align with adopters on content updates and CU eligibility.

 

4-Month "Pay Go" | Subscriber Group

Low oversight for institutions

PartyResponsibilities
Akademos/VitalSourceDeliver CU access based on provided subscriber groups and adoptions, and prevent duplicate charges within a single term.
InstitutionManage subscriber group eligibility and CU adoption accuracy.
CengageMonitor adoption reporting and align with adopters on content updates and CU eligibility.

 

12-Month Subscription | All Students

Moderate oversight for institutions

PartyResponsibilities
Akademos/VitalSourceGroup CU-adopting courses within a single term — as directed by Cengage — to prevent duplicate charges.
InstitutionMonitor term-over-term eligibility and facilitate student opt-out messaging to prevent duplicate charges.
CengageMonitor adoption reporting, dictate term-based course groupings to Akademos/VitalSource, and advise on student-facing opt-out messaging to prevent duplicate charges.

 

12-Month "Pay Go" | Subscriber Group

Highest oversight for institutions

PartyResponsibilities
Akademos/VitalSourceGroup CU-adopting courses within a single term — as directed by Cengage — to prevent duplicate charges.
InstitutionMonitor term-over-term eligibility and facilitate student opt-out messaging to prevent duplicate charges.
CengageMonitor adoption reporting, dictate term-based course groupings to VitalSource, align with adopters on content updates as needed, and advise on student-facing opt-out messaging to prevent duplicate charges.
⚠️  Important note for 12-month agreements: VitalSource cannot manage CU eligibility across multiple academic terms. Term-over-term monitoring, reconciliation, and subscriber management is a shared responsibility between institutions and Cengage.
