Cengage Unlimited Operational Considerations for Traditional & Independent Institutions
This article is intended to help institutions understand the operational considerations of a Cengage Unlimited (CU) agreement. Because CU can be structured in a variety of ways, the degree of institutional responsibility and platform support available through VitalSource will vary depending on agreement model. The information below outlines how institutions and Cengage share responsibility for CU agreements across subscription term lengths and coverage models, supported by VitalSource’s platform capabilities. Please note that a Cengage Unlimited agreement is required to adopt these materials in Day One Access programs.

| Cengage | Monitor adoption reporting, dictate term-based course groupings to VitalSource, and advise on student-facing opt-out messaging to prevent duplicate charges. |
12-Month "Pay Go" | Subscriber Group
Highest oversight for institutions

| ⚠️ Important note for 12-month agreements: VitalSource cannot manage CU eligibility across multiple academic terms. Term-over-term monitoring, reconciliation, and subscriber management is a shared responsibility between institutions and Cengage. |
