Total Access (TA) Programs: Awareness and Deadlines Are Everything

🎓  Total Access (TA) Programs: Awareness and Deadlines Are Everything

If your institution offers a Total Access (TA/EA) program, the institution covers the cost of all required course materials as part of tuition or a student account fee—providing every covered student with everything they need before the first day of class. Coverage may apply to all students, undergraduates only, or a specific program population, depending on your school’s model.

Unlike Student Choice or CA programs, TA students typically don’t need to do anything to receive their materials—which is a tremendous convenience. But this creates its own communication challenge: students who don’t know the program exists may think nothing is happening, get confused by billing, or opt out unnecessarily. Proactive institutional communication is the single most effective tool for preventing these issues.

Your institutional messaging should focus on:

  • Awareness first—let students know their materials are included and will be delivered automatically.

  • How costs work: materials are covered as part of tuition or as a flat per-credit-hour fee charged to the student account, regardless of individual textbook prices.

  • Delivery expectations: physical textbooks shipped to campus or home; digital materials available in the bookstore account and delivered via LMS or via instructor-provided instructions.

  • Opt-out deadlines, every term—students have a window before and after the term starts. Include this information consistently without leading with it.

  • For TA schools where not all students are covered: your messaging must make clear which students are included. Confusion about eligibility is one of the most common pain points we hear internally—a clear, prominent eligibility note in emails and landing pages dramatically reduces support volume.

Recommended actions each term:

  • Send a term-start awareness email using our announcement template (long or short form available from your VSM or B2C Marketing Team).

  • Publish or update your .edu landing page with current program name, how costs work, delivery details, and FAQs.

  • Direct students to the My Courses page to review materials, confirm pickup locations, and access digital content.

Ask your VSM or B2C Marketing Team for the TA student announcement template and landing page language—both long and short form versions are available and can be customized to your program name, cost structure, and delivery details.
