Use these instructions if you do not already have the Course Materials LTI 1.1 link installed for First Day or First Day Complete.

Registering LTI 1.3 Tool

Click on the Settings icon, then click Manage Extensibility.

  1. Click the LTI Advantage Tab, then click Register Tool.
  2. Choose standard registration.
  3. Enter the following information in the Register Tool form:
     
    1. Name: Enter the name for the link you’d like to display in your courses (Recommended: Course Materials)
    2. Description: Text box is included for description purposes.
    3. Domain: https://lti.bncollege.com
    4. Redirect URLs:
      • https://lti.bncollege.com/oauth2callback
      • https://bc.vitalsource.com/oauth2callback
    5. OpenId Connect Login URL: This will be given to you by your BNC Implementation contact
    6. Target Link URI: https://lti.bncollege.com/materials
    7. Keyset URL: This will be given to you by your BNC Implementation contact Under Extensions, choose:
      • Assignment and Grade Services
      • Deep Linking
      • Names and Role Provisioning Services
  1. Substitution Parameters
    1. Click "Add Substitution Parameter"
      • Name: course_start_date
      • Select $CourseSection.timeFrame.begin
    2. Click "Add Substitution Parameter" again
      • Name: course_end_date
      • Select $CourseSection.timeFrame.end
  1. Once the new LTI 1.3 tool is registered, Brightspace will expose a set of configurations that are needed to complete the registration on the BNC side. Copy and paste this data and send it to your BNC Implementation contact to complete the registration and enable the integration.
     

    Note: This data can also be seen again by clicking on the LTI Advantage Tool.

Tool Deployment 

Next, create a Deployment for the new tool that was just created, either from the Creation screen or the Edit Tool screen. 

  1. Click the New Deployment button.
  2. Click the LTI 1.3 Tool Registration that was created in the previous step in the Tool dropdown.
  3. Ensure the following Extensions are selected:
    • Assignment and Grade Services
    • Deep Linking
  1. Ensure the following settings are selected/configured:
    1. Org Unit Information
    2. User Information
    3. Name
    4. Email
    5. User Id
    6. Username
    7. Org Defined ID
    8. Link Information
    9. Title
    10. Description
  2. Classlist including users not known to tool
  3. Configuration Settings
    1. Open as External Resource - Check
    2. Grades created by LTI will be included in Final Grade - Not checked
    3. Auto Create Grade Items - Not checked
  4. Select "Add Org Units."
  5. To deploy the tool, ensure the checkbox is marked for the desired org unit(s); then enable the correct radio button in the options column to add any applicable descendant org units.
  6. After a successful Deployment creation, Brightspace will expose a unique Deployment ID. Copy and paste that value and send it to your BNC Implementation contact along with the LTI 1.3 Tool information created before via a one-time secret link.

Note: This value can also be seen by clicking the new Deployment in the View Deployments screen.

LTI 1.3 Link Creation 

The last step is creating the links to be used in the courses. There are two methods to create links: at the Deployment level or Course level.

Deployment Level

  1. Click View Links from the View Deployments screen.
  2. Click New Link and enter the following:
    1. Name: Enter the name for the link you’d like to display in your courses (Recommended: Course Materials)
    2. URL: https://lti.bncollege.com/materials
  3. Select save and close.
  4. Once the link is created and shared at the Deployment level it is available to be added in all of the courses that the deployment was shared with above. Navigate to a course, and either choose an existing module or create a new one.
  5. Click Existing Activities → External Learning Tools and click on the LTI 1.3 link created previously.

Creating LTI 1.3 Links from the Course Level 

Assuming the LTI 1.3 Tool has been registered and the tool has been deployed and shared with the course, navigate to a course and either choose an existing module or create a new one.

  1. Click Existing Activities → External Learning Tools and scroll down to the bottom of the list.
  2. Click Create New LTI Link.
  3. Enter the name for the link you’d like to display in your courses (Recommended: Course Materials) in the Title field
  4. Enter the LTI URL (https://lti.bncollege.com/materials) and choose the correct LTI 1.3 Tool from the drop-down.
  5. Click Create and Insert.

Using the BNED Content Deep Linking Interface

The next step is to set up deep linking, a powerful feature of our existing LTI tooling that significantly improves course integration. Note that deep linking doesn’t require a new installation.

  1. Create a BNED LTI 1.3 link that will initiate the Deep linking flow:
  2. Click the View Links link from the View Deployments screen.
  3. Click the New Link button and enter the deeplink LTI details:
    • Name: BNED Deep Linking Tool
    • URL: https://lti.bncollege.com/adopt
    • Description: BNED Deep Linking Tool
    • Type: Deeplinking Quick Link
    • Width: 1200
    • Height: 800
    • Click Save and Close
  1. Navigate to the Brightspace course you want to add LTI links to.
  2. In the module, click the Existing Activities button.
  3. Click the BNED LTI Deeplink name, ex. BNC Content Links.

  1. This will launch the instructor to the BNED Content Deeplinking tool. Search for content, choose links from the Table of Contents, review the list of links and then add them back to the course.
