Purpose

Provides an overview of Bookshelf engagement at an institutional and course level. Gain insights to the number of courses, students, average time spent and percent of engaged students.

Dashboard Notes

  • The access filter will automatically filter the report to only show courses and institutions related to the system user.
  • Calculations related to Avg. Session Length and Engagement have been corrected. The original calculation (from the legacy Instructor Dashboard) was not rolling up the data accurately in lieu of the measure.
    • The new calculation addresses that a student may be present in multiple courses. Therefore, the Avg. Session Length and % of Engaged Students are calculated by student and course, so the same student in two courses is represented as two separate records in the calculations to provide a more accurate picture of the student engagement.

Definition of fields

🔵 All fields on dashboard are included here, in alphabetical order.

Field Name Description
% of Engaged Students

Percentage of students that engaged with the content

Calculation = Engaged Students (Unique) / Students (Unique)

📄 Engagement is calculated for each user by course, so one student in two courses is treated as two separate people

Avg. Sessions Length

Average time the student(s) engaged with the content

Calculation = total session time / total sessions

Avg. Sessions per Student

Average number of sessions engaged by a student

Calculation = Sessions (Overall) / Students (Unique)

Course End Date Date the course ends
Course Name Course name (provided by the institution)
Course Start Date Date the course begins
Courses (Total) Total count of unique course IDs
Engaged Students (Unique)

Total count of unique students that engaged with the material (course level)

📄 Engagement is calculated for each user by course, so one student in two courses is treated as two separate people.

Institution Name of the institution (Manage company name)
Sessions (Overall)

Total number of unique sessions

🔵 Sessions are groups of engagement events. These events are determined by calculating the time for each engagement, i.e., when a user starts interacting with content, a session begins; the session ends when there is a 30-minute gap in activity. A new session would begin if that users interacts with the content again after that.

📄 Users often interact with content across multiple devices simultaneously. Sessions that span multiple devices are only counted once under Sessions (Overall), but will be counted as '1' session under each respective device the user used. Therefore, the sum of Sessions (Online), Sessions (Desktop - Mac), Sessions (Desktop - PC), Sessions (Mobile - iOS), and Sessions (Mobile - Android) are generally not expected to align with Sessions (Overall).

For Example:

User A engaged with item ABC from their Desktop - Mac, Online, and through their Mobile - iOS between 9AM - 11AM EST on 02-Dec-2024.

Sessions (Overall) - 1

Sessions (Online) - 1

Sessions (Desktop - Mac) - 1

Sessions (Mobile - iOS) - 1

In other words, Sessions (Overall) is not the total of all session events.

Students (Unique)

Total count of unique students

📄 Engagement is calculated for each user by course, so one student in two courses is treated as two separate people.
