Schoology administrators can quickly and easily install the VitalSource LTI tool in order to provide students and faculty with seamless access to VitalSource Bookshelf and Analytics. There are two sets of instructions below: one for traditional higher-ed institutions, and one for K-12 settings. 

Add System External Tool (Traditional)

  1. Click System Settings on the left menu of your System Admin home page
  2. Click Integration
  3. Click the External Tools tab at the top of the page
  4. Click Add External Tool Provider

Add External Tool Provider (Traditional)

  • Tool Name: VitalSource Course Materials
  • Consumer Key / Shared Secret: [provided by Vitalsource]
  • Privacy: Send Name and Email/Username of users who launch
  • Configuration Type: Manual
  • Match By: URL
  • Domain/URL: https://bc.vitalsource.com/books

Add the External Tool to Individual Courses (Traditional)

  1. In your course, go to Add Materials -> Add External Tool
  2. Select the VitalSource tool and fill in the title as you see fit. Click Submit.

Add System External Tool (K-12)

  1. Click System Settings on the left menu of your System Admin home page
  2. Click Integration (directly below System Settings) in the left navigation menu
  3. Select External Tools tab at the top of the page
  4. Click Add External Tool Provider

  • Tool Name: VitalSource Course Materials
  • Consumer Key / Shared Secret: [provided by Vitalsource]
  • Privacy – Send Name and Email/Username of users who launch
  • Configuration Type – Manual
  • Match By: URL
  • Domain/URL: https://bc.vitalsource.com/books/book

Adding External Tools to Courses (K-12)

  1. In your course, go to Add Materials -> Add External Tool
  2. Select the VitalSource tool and fill in the title as you see fit
  3. In Custom parameters add the eBook identifier you want to link to by adding:
    • VBID=x
    • Where x value=VitalSource book identifier (ISBN/href below)
