SMS & Push Notifications: Reaching Students Where They Are
Text messages and push notifications cut through the noise in a way that even the best email can't always match. When a student is three days from the start of term and hasn't purchased their materials yet, a well-timed text is often the nudge that actually gets them to act.
This section covers two distinct but complementary channels: your institution's own SMS and push notification capabilities, and the SMS program VitalSource operates on behalf of enrolled students.
Your Institution's SMS & Push Notification Channels
Not every institution has SMS or push notification capabilities — but if yours does, these are among the most high-impact channels available for time-sensitive course material communications. Students have their phones with them constantly, and a well-timed message at the right moment in the term cycle can outperform multiple emails.
If you have institutional SMS or push notification capability, consider using it for:
Student Choice: A pre-term reminder with a direct link to the online bookstore — simple, direct, high conversion. "Your fall courses start in one week. Get your materials now → [bookstore link]"
CA schools: A timely reminder in the days before the term starts that clarifies which courses have materials included and which require a purchase, along with the opt-out deadline. Students often don't distinguish between their CA and SC courses until something goes wrong — a proactive text prevents that.
TA schools: An early-term awareness message letting students know their materials are on their way and what to expect. A follow-up as the opt-out deadline approaches is also valuable — not to encourage opting out, but to ensure students who want to make a program decision can do so before the window closes.
Timing suggestions that work well:
2 weeks before term start: general awareness / "your materials are ready"
5–7 days before term start: action-oriented reminder with direct bookstore link
2–3 days before opt-out deadline (CA/TA): deadline awareness message
Day of term start: access reminder for students who still haven't engaged
A few practical tips:
Keep messages short and link directly to the action — bookstore URL for purchases, My Courses for access program students
Coordinate your send timing with your VSM or B2C Marketing team, so institutional SMS doesn't overlap awkwardly with VitalSource's own outreach cadence
If your institution doesn't currently have SMS capabilities but is considering it, your VSM or B2C Marketing team, can share what we've learned from our own program rollout
✅ Don't have institutional SMS? Even a single well-timed push notification through your student portal or mobile app — if you have one — can serve the same purpose. The medium matters less than the timing and the directness of the message.
VitalSource SMS: What We're Doing on Our End
Akademos by VitalSource now sends SMS text message reminders directly to students who have explicitly opted in through a compliant double opt-in process. This is a supplemental touchpoint layered alongside our existing email campaigns — not a replacement for institutional outreach.
A few things worth knowing about the program:
Strictly opt-in only. Students must actively sign up and confirm via a verification code before they receive any messages. Consent is never assumed, and every subscriber has a fully auditable consent trail with timestamp and source recorded.
What students receive. Opted-in students get timely SMS nudges tied to the existing course material reminder cadence — things like pre-term purchase reminders and cart recovery prompts. Messages are plain text, brief, and always include opt-out instructions.
Privacy by design. Students can opt out at any time by replying STOP. Data removal requests (GDPR/CCPA) are handled within the required timelines. No academic or enrollment data is currently used for SMS targeting.
US-only coverage. The program is available to US-based students only, with Texas residents currently suppressed.
