Add an eBook To Your Course in Canvas

For direct access to course materials through Canvas, users will need to navigate to the VitalSource link. Based on how the link was configured in your Canvas instance, it could be in the course navigation or within a module. Below are the different locations within a Canvas course to find the link or to place it.

Course Navigation

The VitalSource tool can be in the course navigation area of the Canvas course either enabled by default OR disabled by default.

  1. Enabled by Default: If it is enabled by default, then no further action is needed, and students have access to it.

  2. Disabled by Default: If you do not see the tool in the course navigation, you may need to enable it. To do so:
    • In the course, navigate to the Settings link at the bottom of the course nav list
    • Click the “Navigation” tab
    • Scroll to the bottom and locate the Course Materials link under “Drag items here to hide them from students”.
    • Click the three dots on the right and click “Enable”

    • This will move it to the course nav for students to see. You can change the order of the nav by dragging to the desired position.
    • Click “Save”

Modules

If your adoption is included in an Access Program and is a VitalSource delivered eBook, you can add a deep link to a specific location within the eBook using the VitalSource Deep Linking tool. That link will be available within a module in the Canvas course.

  1. In a new or existing module, click the Plus sign

If your LMS Admin has made this tool globally available, you will see it listed in your course navigation menu. Don’t see Bookshelf (or some other variation of BookShelf by VitalSource)? Contact your LMS Admin and ask for the BookShelf external tool to be made available in your course.
