May 2024 Bookshelf Library Enhancements

VitalSource is excited to launch new enhancements to the Bookshelf® Library experience to make it easier for instructors and learners to access their content. These enhancements go live in spring 2024, ahead of the fall semester. Bookshelf will have a new Home shelf, a modern design, and reorganized feature touch-points to improve usability.

Redesigned Bookshelf

The Home Shelf

The new Home Shelf acts as an activity hub, offering helpful tools designed to enhance and optimize your Bookshelf study experience.

We’ve added a new navigation bar to the side of the homepage, that will persist across Home, Search, My Library, and the new Favorites.

  1. Home Shelf: launching Bookshelf will now open to the Home shelf.
  2. Search: has moved to the new side navigation bar and a card on your Home shelf.
  3. Store: has been moved to a card on your Home shelf.
  4. Redeem Code has been moved to a card on your Home shelf.
  5. Update Library is no longer available.
  6. Download Bookshelf Apps has been moved to a card on your Home shelf.
  7. My Account has been moved to the lower corner of the new side navigation bar.
  8. Recently Opened Titles will now be listed at the top of your Home shelf.
  9. My Library has moved to the new side navigation bar.
  10. Help has been moved to the lower corner of the new side navigation bar.
  11. Feedback has been moved to the lower corner of the new side navigation bar.
  12. Expired Titles has moved to the new side navigation bar.
  13. Study Tools Help Articles link to how-to guides to help you get the most out of your integrated study tools.

New Home Shelf

New Feature: Favorites! 

Organize your library with our new favorites feature. To favorite a book, click the More Options icon and select Add to Favorites.

Your titles will be visible in the Favorites folder. Favorite books will also continue to be displayed in My Library.

To remove a book from Favorites, click on the More Options icon and select Remove from Favorites.

Explore

Explore moves to a shelf on the side navigation bar. Explore's current functionality is not affected.

My Library

My Library replaces the My Books page and is where you can interact with and access detailed information about all of your books.

  1. Search has moved to the side navigation bar.
  2. Store remains in the upper right-hand corner.
  3. Redeem Code remains the the upper right-hand corner.
  4. My Books is now My Library and displays all books in your license.
  5. Open Book hover state has been removed.
  6. Book Details has been moved to the More Options icon associated with the book card.
  7. Ancillaries have been moved to the More Options icon associated with the book card.
  8. Search within Book has been consolidated with the Content Search and is no longer available on the book card.
  9. Reveal Access Code has been moved to the More Options icon associated with the book card.

Book Cards and More Options

Book Cards show the book cover, title, and edition.

Click on a book cover to open a book.

Opening the more options (three-dot) menu will present the following options:

  •  Open Book
  •  Book Details
  •  View Ancillaries
  •  Add to Favorites

Note: The options available will vary depending on the asset.

Book Details and Ancillaries

Clicking the More Option icon will open the Book Details will display the author, publisher, description, and any additional features of the item.

Access Ancillaries by clicking the More Options icon and selecting View Ancillaries. The Book Details will open to the Ancillaries tab. There have been no changes to ancillaries other than the new location.

Reveal Access Code

Titles with a publisher access code will be identified with an Access Code label in the library. To redeem an access code, click the More Options icon and click Access Code Instructions.

  • Click Reveal Access Code
  • Copy the Access Code
  • Click Go to Website, and redeem the publisher access code.

If an asset with an access code is not bundled with an eBook, clicking the book cover will automatically display the access code redemption instructions otherwise, the eBook associated with the access code will open.

Redeem Code

Click on Redeem Code from the Home Dashboard or My Library to redeem a VitalSource asset code.

Enter your code, exactly as it appears. Click Redeem. You can redeem up to four codes at a time.

Search

Click on the search icon in the side navigation panel to activate a library search. Search will save and display your recent searches as well as provide a type-ahead with suggestions.

Entering a search term yields title and content matches from books within your Library. Search results from within your books will be returned on the Contents tab and organized in order of recently opened books, favorites, and all other content.

Account, Help, and Feedback

The My Account, Help, and Feedback options moved to the side navigation bar and will mirror the design in the eReader experience.

Switch to Old Library

To ease the transition to the new experience, users will be able to navigate back to the existing library for a limited time after release. Click Switch to Old Library on the side navigation bar.

Note: Favorites will not be available in the Old Library.
