Tax-exempt Credit Card Purchases

As a staff or faculty member, you may need to make a purchase with a credit card in an online bookstore associated with an institution that is set up as a tax-exempt entity in our system.

To do this, you will need the tax-exempt ID that is on file with VitalSource for the institution associated with the store. For example, if you are making a purchase on behalf of XYZ High School in the virtual store associated with XYZ University, you will need to know the tax-exempt ID of XYZ University and enter that ID during checkout.

The tax-exempt ID input box will only appear during checkout if the items in your purchase are taxable in your locale.

Once you enter the tax-exempt ID during checkout, you will need to click “Verify ID.”

After clicking “Verify,” you may see any of the following results:

A tax-exempt ID applies to the same state as that found in the “bill-to” address of the institution associated with this online bookstore.

If you are purchasing digital course materials, your billing address must be in the same state as the institution’s “bill-to” address.

If you are purchasing physical items or a combination of digital and physical materials, your shipping address must be in the same state as the institution’s “bill-to” address.

You must click “Verify ID” prior to attempting to place your order. If you no longer wish to check out with a tax-exempt ID, you must remove the ID you entered prior to clicking Place Order.

If the tax ID you entered is successfully verified, you should see zero taxes being charged in the order summary section during checkout, on the order confirmation screen, and in order history after the order is placed.
